Laser resurfacing: what kind of procedure

Today, fractional skin resurfacing using a CO2 laser is the “gold standard” among laser rejuvenation techniques. This method has been actively used in aesthetic cosmetology for over 25 years.

Fractional laser resurfacing qualitatively rejuvenates the skin, improves its appearance, reduces the intensity of signs of aging (wrinkles, folds, sagging), camouflages scars and stretch marks, narrows enlarged pores, restores smoothness and uniform tone.

Why is it better to perform laser resurfacing on a CO2 laser

The CO2 laser is a modern, really safe and effective laser skin resurfacing procedure. The effect of the procedure is visible after a week. The American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery at the University of California conducted a study, the results of which are very eloquent: the CO2 laser stimulates the production of 30% more collagen than the erbium laser.

It is especially worth noting the advantages of fractional (that is, zonal) influence: laser beams, presented in the form of columns of heat, are directed to a specific zone, while the rest of the skin is not affected.

At Esteva Clinic, we use the CO2 laser of the American brand Adonyss CarbonFrax. The peculiarity of this device is its soft action, which allows you to reduce the duration of the rehabilitation period, as well as the variety of modes and nozzles, which allows you to choose the parameters of laser skin resurfacing more individually. The use of Adonyss CarbonFrax equipment is approved by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration).

What you need to know about the procedure

Laser skin resurfacing is suitable for solving the following problems:

  • wrinkles on the face (including the areas around the eyes and lips), neck and chest;
  • laxity of the skin of the face, neck and décolleté;
  • age spots;
  • uneven skin tone and texture;
  • photoaging;
  • the effects of acne on the face, back, hands, and décolletage;
  • scars, stretch marks.

The procedure is suitable for almost all skin types for patients of any age. But methods of influence may have differences, depending on the individual situation.

With age, the appearance and characteristics of the skin change. The epidermis (the top layer of the skin) thins, so spots become more visible. The content of collagen and elastin in the dermis is gradually lost – this leads to the appearance of facial wrinkles and sagging skin.

Fractional laser treatment affects both the epidermis and the dermis. This happens by delivering a laser beam, divided into thousands of tiny but deep columns, into the skin, which in turn stimulates more intense collagen synthesis, reduction of the skin flap and leveling of the relief.

There are a number of contraindications for the laser grinding procedure:

  • chronic diseases in the acute stage;
  • infectious diseases and herpes in the acute stage;
  • the presence of such diseases as tuberculosis, epilepsy, diabetes, as well as oncology;
  • period of pregnancy and lactation;
  • predisposition to the formation of keloid scars;
  • inflammatory processes on the skin.

Efficiency of laser resurfacing

After the procedure, due to the activation of collagen, the skin is tightened, which will be immediately noticeable. Small wrinkles are smoothed out, and deep ones become less pronounced, pigmentation decreases. The first improvements are visible after a few days, but the final effect will be achieved within 6-12 months after the procedure: the CO2 laser “starts” rejuvenation processes that continue to work in the body for a long period of time.

Fractional polishing of the skin with a CO2 laser gives the following results:

  • improvement of skin texture;
  • reduction of pore size;
  • reduction of wrinkles;
  • reducing the depth of scars from rashes;
  • reduction of pigment spots.

Also, with the help of 2-3 procedures, you can improve the situation with stretch marks on the skin of the abdomen and thighs. The fractional CO2 laser can be used not only for aesthetic purposes – it is also effective for the treatment of benign skin lesions (such as actinic keratosis), as well as pigment and sun spots.

Preparation for the procedure

Before the procedure, the doctor must conduct a consultation. A standard consultation includes the following stages:

  1. Survey on the subject of current and transferred diseases, methods of their treatment, taking medicines.
  2. Conducting an examination – the doctor examines the problem area, determines its features – the thickness of the tissue, the presence of pigmentation, scars, etc.
  3. Discussion of motives, possible risks, probable result – the doctor needs to make sure that the patient understands the essence of the procedure, as well as the nuances of the recovery period.

There are general guidelines shown to anyone who plans to sign up for fractional laser skin resurfacing in the near future:

  1. If the patient has a tendency to herpes, antiviral drugs should be taken before and after the session to avoid exacerbation of the chronic problem.
  2. Staying in the open and active sun should be limited 2 weeks before and after the session. Otherwise, irreversible pigmentation of those areas of the skin on which grinding was carried out is possible.
  3. Smoking slows down the skin recovery process, so if possible, you should give up cigarettes at least 14 days before the session.

How fractional resurfacing is performed

The standard procedure lasts 30-60 minutes. To avoid discomfort, cold air is constantly applied to the skin. In addition, at the request of the patient, local anesthesia can be applied.
For patients with small wrinkles on the face, laser modes with lower intensity are used, which allows for a faster recovery period (Medium mode). In the case of deep wrinkles, pigmentation problems and sagging skin, a more intensive treatment is required, requiring a longer recovery time (High mode).

How is the recovery after laser resurfacing

The duration of the rehabilitation period can vary from 3 to 7 days, depending on the depth of laser exposure. Immediately after the procedure, a mesh of microdamage can be seen on the treated area, which persists for 2 days. The redness, similar to a deep sunburn, will persist for the next week. Minimal swelling, especially around the eyes, may occur within 3 days after treatment. Sometimes it takes more time, but already a week after the procedure, neither swelling nor redness remains.
Although CO2 laser fractional resurfacing is a generally safe procedure, any laser exposure is associated with risk. This can be inflammation, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, infection (for example, herpes virus) and scarring (very rare). Spots may also appear, which will disappear over time.
During the healing phase and for several months after treatment, it is recommended to apply a moisturizing sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50+ to the treated area before going outside. Also, to minimize body contact with direct sunlight, protective clothing and wide-brimmed hats should be used.
